MAHARASHTRA SOCIAL FORUM (MSF) Maharashtra Social Forum (MSF), an extension of the World Social Forum was started with the idea to take the concept of "Another World is Possible", to the grassroots. To sensitise, the smallest of the units of society, to fight against war, injustice, social inequities, capitalism, and neo-liberalism. CASA has been actively involved in the WSF process since May 2003 when it was first held at Porto Alegre. CASA shares its concern for the adverse effect of neo-liberalism. CASA was also a part of the Indian Organising Committee for WSF 2004 held in Mumbai. The 1st MSF was organised in 2005 at Ahmednagar in May 2005. More than 6000 people participated in this event mostly from the rural Maharashtra. 137 organisations were registered. This Forum focused on land, water & forest rights, Dalit and Tribal rights, casteism, health and education and Impact of LPG (Liberalisation, Privatisation, and Globalisation). MSF-2007 was also held in Ahmednagar in March 2007. 130 organisations were registered. The Forum mainly focused on SEZ, Land, water and forest rights, Dalit and tribal rights, Casteism, Impact of LPG on Health and education, Women empowerment, Vision of youth, etc. CASA was able to mobilise 750 participants from all across Maharashtra for the forum.
Objectives:- To join other global networks in issues like food security.
- To work out strategies and oppose forces of neo-liberalisation.
- o represent people’s voice at macro level.
- To build alliance with NGOs effecting the livelihood of the people through regional and international forums.
- To involve a process of learning on issues of global concern, which have impacted on regional and local levels.
- To facilitate people’s movement on issues affecting their lives through mass campaigns and mobilise the involvement and support of other civil society organisations.
The following workshops and Seminars were organised by CASA at the MSF-2007, which were participated by mostly Dalits and Tribals attending the Forum.
- Workshop on Sustainable Livelihood Rights
- A Seminar on Impact of Globalization/ Neo liberalization and its effects on the poor and marginalised
- Screened in a special theatre set up at the venue, short documentaries on issues like PRI, Gender, Water, Land Rights, etc and a video on WSF-2004 & ISF-2006
Outcome of this forum- NGO forums/ networks were strengthened to work jointly on identified issues.
- MSF provided an opportunity for interaction among women from various mandals and women's group, motivating them further.
- The print media’s coverage of the event brought to the attention of general public the plight of Dalits, women and Adivasi in Maharashtra.
- Awareness was raised amongst the grassroots people about the negative effect of globalisation, gender disparity, and communalism.
- Issues like water, land, forest, and livelihood affecting the marginalised people of Maharashtra were highlighted.
- The language barrier for the rural people faced in WSF was not there in MSF, where they could share their viewpoint and understand the deliberation and participate.
- This event served as an open platform for women, Dalits and Tribals to express their concerns as well as talent.
