Current status report of flood due to heavy rainfall from 16th June 2008 till 19th June 2008 in Purba (East) & Pashchim (West) Medinipur of West Bengal

Introduction – This is the report of flood situation happened or occurred by heavy rainfall started on 16th of June 2008 and continued till 19th of June 2008. The rainfall was followed with heavy depression and thunderstorm that resulted into flood in Purba (East) and Pashchim (West) Medinipur. An important point to be considered out here is that Purba (East) & Pashchim (West) Medinipur falls under two basin areas where more than one river meets and finally connects to the sea Bay of Bengal. The high tide when occurs in the sea causes to increase the height of the flowing water in the rivers. Because of the heavy rainfall rivers namely Silabati, Kansai, Kansabati, Kapaleswari, Kelayghai, Dulung and Subarnarekha have again crossed the danger level and at some places the water current has destroyed the embankments. Near about 18lacs of people were found affected including both the districts of Medinipur due to heavy rain followed by strong wind and low depression with overflow of water from the canals and the rivers resulting in flood. Everything we have got from the Anandabazar Patrika, Bartaman, Pratidin, Ajkal & others local Newspaper dated 19th June 2008. Our representative visited these affected areas and their remark is that affected people are leaving their places perpetually at the mercy of destructive natural sources and they are coming for taking the shelter at upper land for the result they are being displaced.
