Governor of Himachal Pradesh V.S. Kakoji inaugurated the one day long workshop on Climate Change and Mountain, organised by Himalyan Mountain Forum, on 11th December, 2007, in Shimla. He also inaugurated a memorial on the occasion. The Governor in his inaugural speech expressed his concern over the fast changing climate and attributed the responsibility to the increasing industrialisation, increasing population, uncontrolled development in the urban areas, and excess use of electronic equipments. He said that climate change is an international crisis and the Himalayan regions are getting affected by it. The glaciers are melting fast and this can result in massive floods destroying life and property. He further said that it is our responsibility to spread awareness among the people about this crisis and for this all the government and non-government organisations should come together and work hand in hand. He praised the work done by the forum and congratulated it for bringing the youth together for the purpose. Prof. Suryakant of the Punjab University, honorary secretary of the Himalyan Forum Arvind Kumar Singh and many other distinguished guests were present on the occasion. Mountain Forum Himalayas (MFH) came into being as an answer to the need for a common platform through the efforts of CASA and its partner organisations; to work on different dimensions of environment and sustainable development to attain a better life for the people in Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal. MFH has largely been instrumental in bringing the people oriented development issues to the forefront, by generating healthy debates with the participation of all stakeholders, taking advocacy and lobbying initiatives and networking , to bring about policy level changes.
