(RECEIVED THROUGH ZONAL OFFICE KOLKATA)
1. Cultivation adversely affected: (18th June 2009)
- As per the West Bengal State Government, at least 7000 hectares of cultivatable land still submerged under saline water. No cultivation seems to be possible there at least during this year. However, in places where has dried up cultivation may be possible if salinity gets reduced following heavy and consistent rain in the area.
- As per the experts from “Bidhan Chandra Agricultural University”, the salt content in the affected land is excessive. As such, any possibility of paddy cultivation there also seems remote.
- The experts, however, opine that, following heavy and prolonged rainfall and use of organic manure, salinity can be reduced considerably.
- Further, the government is planning to provide organic manure to 70,000 farmers and also distribute 300 tons of salt tolerant seeds amongst them.
