ODISHA MAROONED WITH HEAVY FLOODS AFFECTING 19 DISTRICTS!

Floods affecting Odisha state in every monsoon is a common sight. However, this year’s flood situation of Odisha looks disastrous ! A ‘national disaster’ like situation looms large! The following figures and situation report (sitrep) shared by our partner, the SPHERE India will enable us to assess the gravity of the flood situation in the flood prone state.
More than 10 lakh people of 578 G.Ps in 85 blocks in 19 districts of Odisha have been affected with the severe flood. Out of 19 districts, 13 districts are highly alerted. 10,565 houses are damages in the flood. Lakhs of people have been evacuated to safer and higher places. There are reports of water logging in several places and disruption of communications due to over flowing of floodwater on roads. Rivers in 19 districts are flowing above the danger level. 9,71,382 cusecs of water is flowing through 59 gates of Hirakud dam with a volume of inflow of 9,20,558 cusecs. Many villages have been marooned.

UPDATE – EARTHQUAKE SITUATION IN SIKKIM, INDIA

A massive earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale jolts the entire east and north of India and Nepal on Sunday the 18th September 2011. While tremors were felt as far as Delhi, UP, Pachim Bongo, Orissa and Nepal, the epicenter of the quake was Mangan – a village, 65 kms away from Gangtok, Sikkim.

NEW NATIONAL BOARD OF CASA FORMED FOR THE QUADRENNIUM 2011-2014
CASA is pleased to announce the reconstitution and formation of the National Board and various other committees at the national level, as well as Zonal Committee of East, South and West Zones for the quadrennium 2011-2014. The Society of CASA, as per the Constitution, forms the National Board once in 4 years, and the National Board elects the Officers of CASA and also approves the reconstitution of the Zonal Committees with the participation of the member Churches.

Today, HAP International welcomes Dr Raven-Roberts as its new Executive Director.
Dr Raven-Roberts has over twenty years experience in the international humanitarian and development field, as a practitioner and advocate within the United Nations and the NGOs community, as well as an academic. She began her international career in Papua New Guinea with Voluntary Services Overseas and managed humanitarian and development programmes for Oxfam America and Save the Children USA in Ethiopia for several years. In 1991, she joined UNICEF in New York as a Senior Project Officer in the Office of Emergency Programmes, where she was responsible for policy development in gender and conflict issues, post-conflict recovery programmes and internally displaced children. From 1998 until 2002, she was the Director of Academic Programmes at the Feinstein International Famine Centre, where she managed the design of the first Master’s of Arts in Humanitarian Assistance (MAHA) degree in the USA, developed specialist courses on gender, culture and humanitarian assistance and led several successful humanitarian initiatives with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard and other universities. She returned to UNICEF in 2005, this time in Geneva, as the Regional Emergency Advisor for Central and Eastern Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States.
