| For Selvi of Maruthadu, TN this Pongal was not a Joyous occasion ! |

Its been two weeks since the Cyclone Struck the village of Maruthadu in Cuddalore district. The affected people are still to get back to normalcy. They have to Cope up with winter when there is no roof above their head. The Tamil Harvest Festival Pongal is going on. In this festive season, people decorate their houses. But for the victims the very house is destroyed by the cyclone. This puts the victims in tremendous emotional and psychological pressure! Hence repairing the Houses does need to take place to ensure that each one's family is safe and that during the Pongal the victims have something to celebrate for. Many families have been psychologically gearing up to rebuild their houses. While most of the houses are partially damaged, the task seems to be easy. But looking at the government's compensation in their village is a paltry sum of Rs.5000/- per damaged house – be it partially or fully ! The affected communities feel its a ‘drop in the ocean’. In this context where the affected communities in Partially damaged houses themselves are finding it difficult to repair their houses for Rs.5000/-, what about the affected communities with fully damaged houses?
Ms. Selvi of Maruthadu is a case in point. She is a widow with smal children to take care of! Her house has been fully damaged. She has not been able to repair the house and is staying in her relative's house. Being a widow and a daily labourer, life has become very difficult for Selvi this Pongal.
