Flood has affected the education of children very badly, that children not only lost opportunity to attend classes for the last 25 days, but also all the education materials.

In Gamaria relief camp in Madhepura dist, CASA has initiated informal classes, with the help of volunteers from Kolkatta and local Anganwadi teachers. Children get three hours of informal learning. ‘This time of learning and fun will make sure that the children would look forward to join their schooling after the floods are settled’ says one of the teachers Kala Devi.

I am so excited that we have classes here in the camp; I am also happy that I am asked to resite stories and lessons I learnt from my school in my village’ says Asrina Khatoon (Photo - Asrina recites a Poem during a informal class session)

In the crowded relief camps, the children are vulnerable to sexual abuse and all other exploitations. There is also a fear that child trafficking business is roaring in flood affected districts in this hopeless situation. It is disheartening fact that the international and national agencies and organisations that work for children have abandoned the Bihar flood victims, where nearly a million children are not only at risk but also struggle for a morsel of rice to sustain their life and a piece of cloth to cover their body. CASA’s initiative of informal education has encouraged many other organisations and the Govt. authorities to immediately start alternative education programme for children in relief camps.
