Ram Dev Ram (50) and his son Parvesh Ram (12) were at work near home when water gushed into their village Manganch in Tribenigang Panchayat, Supaul dist. On the 20th August at 5 pm. Ram struggled to help Parvesh climb on a tree, while Ram risked his life in vain to take the belongings from home. The water rushed so fast that he couldn’t but only take some raw rice and climbed on to a tree and both father and son managed to go to the tin roof –top of their house. 13 days from then was sleepless struggle between life and death. ‘We hardly found any rescue boats and some days we saw helicopters fly over dropping into the water some packets’ recollects Parvesh. ‘We survived those hopeless days with the little raw rice I could carry in a piece of cloth. When we were thirsty to death we forced ourselves to drink the same water, where we saw at least 25 dead bodies, countless dead and alive cattle and all kinds of house hold articles floating. You may not understand how ridiculous it was for us to pass urine and motion on that open risky sliding roof-top’ narrates Ram with anger and pain. It rained several time and we had to just be there without knowing what to do. Parvesh is 7th std student of Madhu Vidhyalaya, Manganch Pachmi. Since Kosi river has taken its new course over this village, it may not be even possible to know how many among the 300 students could have escaped death like Parvesh. ‘Which school will I go again? If I have to wait for monthstogether in the relief camp, will I go to 7th std or 8th std after the floods? Asked Parvesh. On 2nd Sept when Ram saw a local boat, he pleaded with the boatman and begged him to rescue them. ‘We were dropped in Datwa chowk and later a government boat took us from Datwa chowk and dropped at Tribenighang’ narrated Ram. Ram’s wife Kabutar Devi (40) and youngest daughter Kanchana Kumari (6) were in Madhepura from 16th Aug, with Kabuthar Devi’s parents to celebrate raksha bandhan. Ram family is now at CASA Bhalwa relief camp. While asked for their plans after the floods, Ram asked us, ‘if you learned people don’t know where we should go after the floods, how do you expect we farmers to know where to go? Since Kosi has taken its new course, many of the camp members will not have a village to go. CASA has great responsibility to ensure shelter and rehabilitation for thousands who are at a total loss! Bihar govt in appreciation to CASA’s work has committed to provide land for constructing shelters for the affected. Join us in our solidarity with families like Ram Dev Ram.
