Baby Vikram was only 10 days old when the floods hit Mirzawa village. Shanti Devi never thought that her family would escape the furious flood water that hit their house on the 18th August evening. Not being able to do anything or take any decision, Shanthi Devi, her husband Shikendar Sada with their four children waited in their home. On 19th at 4 am when the water almost reached neck level they decided to give a final trial to save their life. While Shikendar grabed the three older children (2, 3.5 and 5 year old) and walked on the water, Shanti Devi had to hold 11 days old Vikram over her head and walk on the neck-level water for nearly 4 hours before they reached Mirzapur Pool. CASA has a feeding centre in Mirzapur pool. This family from musaha community (Dalit) is also exited to see people from various communities living together. CASA insists that communal harmony is maintained in all its relief camps. ‘It was very difficult for me to breast feed Vikram until CASA began feeding us. Now I get enough food twice a day and I am able to feed my son very well’ says Shanthi. In Mirzapur Pool relief settlement, among 1200 people 450 are children under 15 and Vikram is the youngest. Vikram will loose this position as the youngest child soon because there are at least 5 pregnant women in the camp who will deliver soon.
