Pankaj who went outside their home that night never came back. Meena Gathu (29), with her three children, is at a loss at Patna Railway Station, where she reached yesterday after spending 8 days of starvation at her stranded village Lalitgram in Saharsa district. Meena’s children who are seven, four and one are yet to understand the tragedy that has stuck their life.

With new surroundings and crowded people around Vikas feels restless. ‘Vikas couldn’t realise the crisis when we were running to escape from the mounting water. Why did I let my Husband go?
Urmila Devi is left with her three children Anshu (4), Anu (2) and Tintu Kumar (1). It was not an easy task for Madan Jadav to save his wife and three children that night when Kosi hit their village mercilessly. After starving for two days they reached the relief camp run by CASA at Bhelwa in Gamaria Block in Madhepura district. Out of concern for the house and curiosity to see the water level in their village called Kusaha, 30 kilometres away in district Supaul, Jadav left the relief camp, walking on the neck-level water and he never returned. Now Tintu is seriously ill and there is no healthcare facility available in the camp.

VOICES FROM THE FIELD / CASE STUDIES: Hawari Devi, (age 30 years) along with her three children were rescued by the army team from Badarpur village in Supaul district of Bihar. They had taken refuge on roof top of their house for the last 12 days, with water all around them. Her youngest child is just 9 months old, surviving on breast milk.

Arti Jha (age 31 years) with her relatives and three children were rescued from village Khatapur in Supaul district. The family had taken shelter on their roof top for the last 10 days eargerly waiting for someone to come and help them move to safer place. As the whole village was submerged in water, there was no means of communication / transportation and were totally cut-off from the mainland.

Following the Kosi floods, old and haggard Kadamlal Yadav – of Harihar Patti village in Supaul district- having lost his house and livestock, was surviving only on chura (roasted gram flour), raw rice and rain water for the past 12 days, and unable to even walk properly due to weakness. Supported by his relatives, and rescued by the Army fortunately, Kadamlal is safe and surviving now- awaiting food and necessary medical assistance in the relief camp of CASA. |
